Session 2:  Governance Structure:  (Jan Adelman & Jim B.)

Handout from Jan; Picking up from DELTA conference in April 2003

What does this group expect from its champions?

Note:  There is a group that is meeting in Madison (Dennis James MATC) collaboration for Bb & Faculty Development Centers, etc.) Web site – WTCS Prof Dev should connect to this.  To Do:  Patrick to follow up at MATC, Mad-Town

Much of the responsibility for continuing this professional development effort should be assumed by each district and representative participating in WTCS Prof Dev team.

What about WTCSB Advocate? – Sharon, no news from state other than posting of a position. Possible re-org to impact position and responsibilities (different from Jeff’s role)

What did we originally intend from state?  Advocacy was the answer from the group.

What group would be next champions?  Susan Allen Davis (SWTC), Wm Patrick Barlow (MATC) present not attending, but included as next championing group (MATC-Milw, Waukesha, Gateway, Blackhawk) Volunteered

Five Hottest Topics “Share Sessions”

Learning Objects – Susan Davis Allen – FIPSE – how to teach courses online

Certification:

Sharon Spangberg - #58 online – polling of district certification need and if online

Positive interest to make it a go – multiple facilitators

State Certification Committee – blessing the assessment of sign off for individuals to receive certification requirement

Margaret Brunn – FVTC Online model for Assessment but not equivalent to Ed Eval. Would need additional work to meet Ed Eval.  Does contain Learning Objects.  CVTC does have file online

Patrick Barlow – will be utilizing the online model for an instructor who needs Ed Eval right now.  The information online will be supplemented.

Jim Begotka – need to collaborate on Accelerated Learning and Ed Diversity in an online format

Lynn Retzak – need to expose faculty to ITV environment

Lois – Utilize ITV to expose faculty by department

Al Javorski – need 10-hour certification for adjunct.  Part-time approval from State.  Lots of courses are substituted for true Certification courses.

State competencies are modularized to assist in meeting the 10-hour need.

Patrick Barlow – tracking of certification information.  Modularized courses – problem with individuals registering for just a particular module – but not in sequence.

Some colleges attempting to guide faculty to take full 2-credit course.

Jim Begotka – give 1 CEU instead of credit for full 2-credit course

Training and Development Center

Susan Davis Allen – Faculty Innovation Center based off grant – bringing in new technology and online course development along with training.

Concern – overlap of ties to Faculty Innovation Center and Professional Development

WIDS group – does that tie as well?

Best Practice – One office location that allows for open communication

Have group technology trainings ongoing through the year

Lois Slattery – one-page survey regarding needs of all staff at all locations.  The survey encompassed skill levels, comfort levels, and if want training on technology.  Also on  the survey is what do staff prefer for learning – workshops, one-hour session, self-experiment, etc.

Trade specific software – (not well received)

Topics on new technology – give CECs for 4-hour sessions.

Also asked demographic information to see how to gage what, where, position, age, location.

Margaret Brunn – Zoomerang survey for technology needs.  Also looking at leadership survey.

Al Javorski uses Zoomerang to evaluate professional development

Collaboration:

Sue Zittlow – tech modules

SkillSoft - Lori Riemann uses for computer training

HelpDesk cards (HelpDeskcards.com) – Linux, Red Hat, Office suite, $500 for CD and has available on the Intranet.

Patrick – pedagogy or just technology?

Hot Topics in Professional Development –

Achieve Global creates training modules – Jan does one per month

Get training schedules on the website for Professional Development

Motivation: get people to come to the training.

Survey staff, teaching technology, now:  why don’t they come?  They do not see the need.  We do not have any standards for students and instructors.

ISTE, NETS, Washington State has standards.

Theme days at Madison – not professional development days.  All staff not just faculty.  Motivated by Second City coming in to deal with issues regarding the theme of the year – agent for change.

Professional Development Assessment Planning

Andrea – ROI – how does what we do improve learning?  We already ask the smiley faces assessment.  How do we gather information?

Should be an ongoing assessment and a needs assessment.

We need outcomes first.

Jan Adelman – Developed staff qualities and abilities. Also included are examples of how to evaluate.  Employee planning and reviewing is going to be redone.

Have created self-eval on staff qualities and abilities.  Did receive 50%+ surveys back.  Surveyed the supervisors to receive feedback on employees as well.

How track professional development goals?

HR dept received it and put it into the employee staff.

Pathlore and PeopleSoft 8.0 have tracking mechanism.

Outcomes assessment seminar – Susan Davis Allen – her knowledge received:  every area needs outcomes and assessments for all areas/functioning areas of the college.  Need to be from the bottom-up rather than top-down.

For tracking – the minutes will show that the outcomes are being addressed.

Idea – best practices discussed at every session regarding organizational assessment.

There is a state-wide learning assessment group.

Learning Objects for Professional Development

Beth Hennes – need for HR and interview teams:  What is an effective way to teach staff how to do an interview, how to review applications, how to choose the interview team?  Using Producer to do snip-its for training.

Carol Bartlett at FVTC is starting to create Learning Objects for Professional Development.

Do we want to set standards for our learning objects?

Lori Reimann – ½ day session on learning SWISH and how to use in the classroom.  Participants received the software.

Website for Learning objects:  www.wisc-online.org

NWTC:  online.nwtc.edu/learning_objects

Afternoon Topics:  Training Center (Professional Development) and Certification

April session:  Hot topic - assessment

Hot Topics Breakout Small Group Discussion:

Certification

Al Javoroski, Beth Kost, Lynn Retzak, Jim Begotka, Sharon Spangberg,

Andrea Schullo willing to participate in developing

Certification at MSTC – Cert Offficer in HR.  Al coordinates 50 (Ind. Study), 52  & 54 (F2F 4 hour blocks, 7 nights). Facilitators paid. Al facilitates activities as well. Adjunct creating greatest demand. No charge to participants. Many go through Stout. Demand – typical enrollment is 8-18 (50, 52, 54) ~100 FT Faculty, ~300 Adjunct.  Closed campus, faculty must do outside of teaching hours.

When did the transition occur where districts started delivering certification activities? 1993 Admin Code.  What obligation do the districts have in offering options to our faculty to meet certification, versus UW?

Beth from Nicolet – handout on NTC’s approach – Integration with new faculty “New Teacher Induction Program”.  Part of workload. 2 hrs/week/semester.

Logistics: How do new faculty have common time. Deans would schedule accordingly.  Not realistic at other schools (LTC, MSTC & NWTC).

http://online.nwtc.edu/instructors/jbegotka/   Web page to support #52

http://www.mstc.edu/instructor/AJavor/Certification/CourseSchedule.htm  Al Javoroski’s web site with materials to support #52, #50, #54

Work collaboratively (Nicolet, MSTC, NWTC & LTC) to create an online individualized option for Ed Eval.  Set meeting. Jim to follow-up by email with to set meeting date, time and location.  End Date January 2004.

Step1: Look at the competencies from state to look for divisions into modules Step 2: Lay out modules per state model of competencies and standards
